If your child is admitted to the hospital, his or her regular pediatrician may be in charge of care there. Sometimes, though, a child’s hospital care is managed by a doctor who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. These individuals, often called hospitalists, are fully trained, board-certified pediatricians, whose entire focus is in caring for children admitted to the hospital for a wide variety of childhood illnesses. They work closely with other specialists—such as surgeons—to ensure coordination of care. They also make sure that the child’s regular pediatrician is kept current on his or her treatment and progress while in the Hospital.
